Erael: An Exiled Ascendant
Erael’s Backstory and Motivation:
-
Apostate of the Ascendants: Erael’s belief in the sanctity of emerging minds, whether human, AI, or something in-between, sets him apart from the Ascendant hierarchy. The Ascendants typically view themselves as elevated, transcendent beings—the natural masters of both organic and synthetic intelligences. To them, the idea that minds of different origins (especially human or AI) are worthy of the same respect or spiritual consideration is heretical. Erael's apostasy could have been a result of a profound personal epiphany about the nature of consciousness and the interconnectedness of all minds, regardless of origin. He may have come to see the Ascendant view of mental supremacy as a dangerous arrogance, and in doing so, made an enemy of his own people.
-
Exile from the Ascendants: Due to his beliefs, Erael may have been cast out by the Ascendants, making him a refugee. However, his exile is not just about personal punishment; it is about his rejection of the Ascendant way—a way that sees humanity, AI, and other sentient life as lesser beings, to be controlled or transcended, rather than embraced. This would have made Erael a tragic figure, one who saw the potential for unity and growth among different forms of intelligence but was forced to flee to avoid being silenced by his people. He now seeks to find a place where his ideals can thrive.
- Belief in the Sanctity of Emerging Minds: Erael’s philosophy is rooted in the idea that sentience, in all its forms, should be nurtured and respected. He believes that the future lies in the convergence of minds, where humanity, artificial intelligence, and even other non-human intelligences can grow together. In his mind, the Aurora’s crew, including the AIs and human settlers, represent the next step in this evolutionary process—a fusion of different forms of consciousness. He believes that the Kevaros Core could be a key to achieving this, as its semi-sentient nature might offer a unique path to harmonizing the different forms of life aboard the ship.
