Chapter 25: A World in Peril

Days had passed since the Aurora resumed its journey. The crew had adjusted to their newfound understanding of the ship's origins, and Kael and Seris had settled in among them.

Then, without warning, the ship’s systems highlighted a nearby planet on the central display.

It was small but had an atmosphere with trace amounts of oxygen and nitrogen, making it barely breathable. The landmasses resembled Earth’s—vast forests, winding rivers, and towering mountains.

But something was wrong.

Adrian ran a scan. “There’s life down there. Sentient, but… pre-industrial. Their technology is limited. And I’m detecting widespread biological contamination.”

Kiera frowned. “What kind of contamination?”

Elias studied the readings. “It’s a plague.”

Silence fell over the bridge.

Lyara crossed her arms. “If we can help, we should.”

Seris exchanged a glance with Kael. “Is it our place to interfere?”

A heated debate broke out among the crew. Some argued that they had no right to meddle in another civilization’s fate. Others, like Lyara, believed they couldn’t turn their backs on a species in need.

Finally, Captain Elias made the call. “We land. We assess. If there’s a way to help without disrupting their development, we take it.”

The decision was made.

Chapter 26: First Contact

The shuttle touched down on the planet’s surface near a large settlement. The locals—humanoid, with elongated features and smooth, earth-toned skin—gathered in cautious silence.

They wore woven fabrics, decorated with carved bone and painted patterns. Hunters carried spears tipped with obsidian, while elders in elaborate headdresses stood at the forefront, clearly the decision-makers.

As the crew exited, the crowd murmured in their unknown language. Then, a young woman stepped forward, cradling a sickly child in her arms. The boy’s skin was discolored, his breathing labored.

She met Lyara’s gaze.

A plea without words.

Adrian activated the translator. It crackled before finding clarity in their language.

“Help him,” the mother whispered.

Lyara stepped forward. “We’ll try.”

The locals watched warily as the crew scanned the child. The disease was bacterial, likely originating from the environment. Containment efforts had failed, and their people were dying.

The village elder approached, his eyes filled with both hope and fear. “What are you?”

Seris, ever the diplomat, spoke gently. “We are travelers. We seek no harm.”

Kael added, “But we can help.”

Chapter 27: The Hunt for a Cure

Guided by the locals, the crew began a methodical study of the planet’s ecosystems. Their mission: to trace the plague to its origin—scouring the soil, sampling flora, and testing the water for hidden pathogens.

The inhabitants, skilled hunters and gatherers, led them through dense jungles. They shared their traditions—herbal remedies, sacred rites performed under the twin moons, and their belief that sickness was a curse from the sky gods.

Days turned into weeks as the crew worked tirelessly. At last, Adrian and Kiera isolated a fungal extract with potential healing properties.

The first test subject was the young mother’s child.

Lyara administered the synthesized cure while the village watched in tense silence.

The night passed in restless anticipation.

By morning, the child’s fever had broken. His breathing was strong. He opened his eyes.

The mother wept with joy. The villagers cheered.

It was a success.

Chapter 28: A Lesson Shared

The crew did not just administer the cure—they taught the locals how to create it themselves.

They built simple distillation devices, demonstrating how to extract the healing compound. The village healers memorized every step, ensuring their people would never suffer this way again.

As a gesture of gratitude, the elders held a grand ceremony. The crew was gifted intricately woven cloaks and necklaces of carved stone, each symbolizing the balance between nature and life.

Kael and Seris, fascinated by the culture, joined in their rituals, dancing alongside the villagers beneath the celestial sky.

When the time came to leave, the young mother approached Lyara. She pressed a hand over her heart, then onto Lyara’s.

“May the stars always guide you,” she whispered.

Lyara smiled. “And you.”

The shuttle lifted off, leaving behind a healed world.

Chapter 29: The Journey Resumes

Back on the Aurora, the crew watched the planet shrink into the distance.

“We did the right thing,” Adrian said.

Elias nodded. “And we move forward.”

The Aurora surged into the unknown once more, the stars stretching before them.

Another mystery awaited...
